Paleo Sweet and Sour Chicken

This paleo sweet and sour chicken is a family favorite. We had been eating this since my girls were little and one of the first recipes I knew I had to recreate once I went paleo.

This recipe is a healthier take on the classic takeout favorite. It is made with tender bites of chicken, and a sweet and tangy sauce. Instead of refined sugar, cornstarch, and processed ingredients, this recipe uses wholesome, paleo-friendly ingredients to create the same bold flavors you love.

Why is paleo sweet and sour chicken a FAVORITE?

This recipe is so popular and versatile. It is hearty enough for a weeknight family dinner but impressive enough to serve guests. Pair it with cauliflower rice, steamed vegetables, or your favorite paleo side dish for a complete meal that comes together with minimal effort. It also reheats beautifully, making it an excellent choice for meal prep or leftovers.

Ingredients

  • Chicken breasts
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Garlic powder
  • Tapioca powder
  • Eggs
  • Avocado oil
  • Honey
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Paleo ketchup
  • Coconut aminos

Let’s make this paleo sweet and sour chicken

  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
  • Make the sauce by combining the honey, apple coder vinegar, ketchup, garlic powder, and coconut aminos/
  • Cut chicken breasts in to bite size pieces. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Add tapioca powder to the chicken and stir to coat all of the pieces of chicken.
  • Whisk eggs in a separate bowl. heat a large skillet with avocado oil over medium heat. Once oil is hot, dip each piece of chicken in the egg mixture and then place in the skillet. Cool until browned on each side. You will need to do this in batches in order to not over crowd the skillet.
  • Once all of the chicken is cooked, place in a baking dish and cover with all of the sauce. Toss to combine.
  • Bake for 45 minutes, stirring a few times while it is cooking.
  • {NOTE} We are a sauce loving family, so I always double the sauce recipe so that we have extra for the cauliflower rice. Just put half on the chicken and reserve the rest. Heat it up just before serving.

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper

  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1/2 cup tapioca powder

  • 3 eggs

  • 1/2 cup avocado oil (have more on hand in case needed while browning the chicken)

  • Sauce
  • 3/4 cup honey

  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar

  • 1/2 cup ketchup (make sure to find a paleo compliant brand)

  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1 teaspoon coconut aminos

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Have a baking dish ready to bake the chicken in the oven.
  • Make sauce by combining all of the sauce ingredients in a bowl and stir. Set aside.
  • Season cut chicken pieces with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Add tapioca powder to the chicken and stir to coat all of the pieces of chicken.
  • Whisk eggs in a separate bowl. Heat a large skillet with avocado oil, over medium high heat. Once oil is hot, dip each chicken in the egg mixture, then place the chicken in the avocado oil and cook until browned on each side. You will need to do this in a few batches in order to not overcrowd the skillet. Have extra oil on hand incase you need to add more as you are cooking the chicken.
  • Once all of the chicken is cooked, place in a baking dish and cover with all of the sauce. Toss to combine.
  • Bake for 45 minutes, stirring a few times while baking.

Notes

  • If you like a lot of sauce, you can double the sauce recipe to use on your cauliflower rice.

This paleo sweet and sour chicken is perfect for those nights when all you crave is some good take out food and what I love most besides the flavor, is that you can make this ahead of time. I will prep the chicken and even brown it all and make the sauce ahead of time. I like to serve this over cauliflower rice for a satisfying grain-free meal. Once you are ready, place in the oven and let it do its thing in the oven. I hope that you enjoy this as much as I do.
