Instant Pot Bone Broth

What makes bone broth so good for you.

Bone broth is rich in vitamins, minerals, glucosamine, and contains amino acids.

Glucosamine helps reduce inflammation and joint pain, making this an absolute staple for me to have on hand. Amino acids boost your immune system, making this a go to when feeling under the weather.

Bone broth helps with:

  • Digestion
  • Respiratory issues
  • Allergies
  • Asthma
  • Arthritis
  • Maintains healthy skin
  • Boosts detoxification
  • Leads to healing and maintaining a healthy gut

It is absolutely amazing to think that something as simple as bone broth can have all of these healing benefits.

And then, there are the veggies. Yes, you can buy the veggies to make this broth. But, I also take my veggie scraps and keep them in a bag in the freezer as well. I take all of my carrot ends, carrot peels, skin of the onions, celery tops, and herbs about to go bad and have them on hand and am always able to throw together some bone broth.

Ways to enjoy bone broth.

  • Use it as a base for soups, stews, or any recipes calling for chicken stock.
  • Add to sauces and gravies for extra flavor and richness.
  • Sip it warm; especially when you are starting to feel under the weather or are sick.

Ingredients

  • Bones (use leftover chicken, beef, or pork bones)
  • Onion
  • Carrots
  • Celery
  • Garlic
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Fresh herbs
  • Raw apple cider vinegar
  • Water

I always have a few quarts of this in my freezer at all times and like to refer to this as “liquid gold”. So easy to make and so great to keep on hand.

Directions

  • Place all of the bones in the metal insert of your Instant Pot.
  • Add in remaining ingredients and fill the pot with water. Cover all of the bones and vegetables.
  • Cover the instant pot, lock and, make sure the vent is closed. Hit manual and set for 120 minutes.
  • Once it is done cooking, release the steam. Let bone broth cool and then remove all of the vegetables and bones.
  • Cover and place in the refrigerator overnight.
  • The next day, uncover and skim off the top payer of fat. Use the broth or freeze for up to 6 months.

Ingredients

  • 3-4 pounds bones (chicken, beef, or pork bones, use those leftover bones and do not throw any bones away)

  • 1 onion, cut in to quarters, with the skin on

  • 4 carrots, washed, but no need to peel them, cut in to large pieces

  • 2 celery stalks, cut in to large pieces

  • 1 clove garlic, smashed

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

  • handful of fresh herbs, like thyme, rosemary, parsley, and sage. You can use all of these or just one of them

  • 2 tablespoons raw apple cider vinegar- this is a must have. This is what draws the marrow out of the bones and makes this liquid gold.

  • water to fill the pot and cover the bones and vegetables

Directions

  • Place the bones in the metal insert of the instant pot (you can use the bones right from your freezer).
  • Add remaining ingredients and fill the pot with water, enough to cover the bones and vegetables.
  • Cover the instant pot, lock, and make sure the vent is closed. Hit manual button and set for 120 minutes.
  • Once finished, release steam with the vent. Let the bone broth cool and then remove all of the bones, vegetables, and herbs. Cover broth and place in the refrigerator overnight.
  • The next day, uncover and skim off the top layer of fat. Use or freeze for up to 6 months .

Equipment

  • Instant Pot
  • Slow cooker

Notes

  • **Slow cooker instructions- place all ingredients in the slow cooker and cook for 12 hours.
  • ***Quick tip- when I am cutting onions, celery, and carrots, I keep all of the scraps and place in a freezer safe bag. When I am ready to make bone broth, I always have the vegetables ready to go.

This bone broth can be used in any recipe that calls for chicken broth or even some recipes that call for beef broth. I use it in my Beef Pot Roast, Chicken Curry, Beef Stew, Sausage Potato Soup, or Chicken Scallopini. Making this bone broth really is so easy when you use the instant pot and only takes 2 hours. If you do not have one, you can make this in the slow cooker, but it does need to cook on low for 12 hours. Either way, you will have this amazing broth that is great to use in recipes and so rich in nutrients.
